PHILOSOPHY
The only word you are allowed to say
during the training is “Uketamo”
It means “I accept.”
Yamabushi understood that to be able to appreciate life and live it to the fullest, acceptance was key. So much so, their core philosophy is built around it. Translated as I accept, Uketamo is the yamabushi philosophy and way of life developed through ascetic training in the greatest dojo the Haguro yamabushi knew, the three Dewa Sanzan mountains here in north Japan.
Master Hoshino interpret this concept as “soul-sensing over overthinking” —a direct, embodied approach to practice that cuts through mental clutter:
"Put simply, sensing with your soul is everything. Do everything as your soul senses and you will have no trouble. Trouble happens when we get stuck in our heads. We make things difficult for ourselves precisely because we overthink. Start by sensing with your soul, you will have no trouble. Act at the whim of your soul, and things will go smoothly."
Following this wisdom we drop the idea of expectation, and of thinking in a typical way, and experience something more powerful, the ability to live without knowing what might happen next, the ability to improvise. And the ability not to worry, to just enjoy the experience of this moment.
We wanted to provide international audience the opportunity to discover what the Dewa Sanzan Yamabushi have known for millennia,
So, we teamed up with local yamabushi and Zen masters to create the ”Yamabushido” experience.
We are practicing yamabushi ourselves, but we also live in the 21st century. We have adapted and updated the principles of the yamabushi into our trainings to better connect with the needs of people today.
“When you hear the stories at the Naorai, the after-training meal, it’s quite profound. We’re doing the exact same training, but the realisations people have are completely different, all for making better lives. I feel very proud that I’m able to provide that opportunity.”
— Tim, The Certificated Yamabushi
