TRANSFORMATIVE YAMABUSHI TRAINING

THE MOUNTAINS SHAPE US

For over 1,500 years, Yamabushi have walked The Three Mountains of Dewa in Yamagata, Japan, in search of enlightenment. And, for the first time ever, you can too.

Our Yamabushido Shugyo and Trainings are an opportunity to take part in something unique. They are a chance to restore your mind, body, and spirit. They are an unforgettable challenge of self-development and self-discovery.

YAMABUSHI SHUGYO AND TRAINING

For millennia, the sacred Dewa Sanzan mountains where our Yamabushido programs are based have been training ground for spiritual development. There are two main ways in which these three peaks have been used, Yamabushi Shugyo, and Yamabushi Training.

YAMABUSHI SHUGYO

Yamabushi Shugyo is as intense as it gets. No talking. No reading or writing. No clocks. Just you, nature, and Uketamo, the philosophy of the yamabushi.

Yamabushi Shugyo is not for the average person. It purposely takes you well out of your comfort zone and challenges you in a way only these mountains can.

If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, we have two programs for you.

MASTERS SHUGYO

A weeklong retreat including Yamabushi Shugyo under Master Hoshino on all three of the Dewa Sanzan: Mt. Haguro, Mt. Gassan, and Mt. Yudono.

BASIC SHUGYO

A six-day retreat including Yamabushi Shugyo under the direction of a certified Yamabushi on Mt. Haguro.

RESET TRAINING

Three-day program on Mt. Haguro incorporating core elements of yamabushi training and Zen Buddhism with more modern methods of reflection focused on a spiritual reset of body and mind.

WINTER RESET TRAINING

Three-day program during the snowy winter months that is perfect for reflecting on the year that was, and preparing for the year ahead.

YAMABUSHI TRAINING

We understand not everyone wants or needs the intensity and seriousness of Yamabushi Shugyo, but they still want the opportunity for self development. This is why we also offer Yamabushi Training.

Yamabushi Training is steeped in centuries of journeys to the sacred mountains of Dewa in what is known as Dewa Sanzan Ko. Yamabushi Training is less intense, but it still maintains the core philosophy of Uketamo and many of the same activities out in nature, just with the added opportunity to ask questions and even take photos.

If you’d like to learn more, check out these three training programs.

THREE PEAKS RESET TRAINING

Ultimate personalised journey of discovery under the guidance of yamabushi and Zen masters on all three of the sacred Dewa Sanzan mountains.

Want to find out how you can join? Still unsure which is the program for you?

PHILOSOPHY

Over mountains, through forests, across rivers, and under waterfalls, Yamabushido is your chance to be one of the first in the world to take part in a collection of ascetic mountain practices under the guidance of Master Hoshino.

Curated especially for an international audience for the first time ever, Yamabushido is open to anyone looking to challenge themselves and better face the future.

“Truly amazing experience of the Yamabushi way. In the five days we experienced and learned the basics of Yamabushi life in the three sacred Dewa mountains depicting birth, death and resurrection. Along our Yamabushi training we also saw a glimpse Shonai region life, including local food, people and exhibitions. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to get in touch with nature, mountains and the spiritual route of life. Truly a great retreat to enhance your mindfulness.”
