The Essence of Yamabushi Is Prayer
Mt. Gassan in July.
We mentioned it last time. Mt. Gassan is no ordinary mountain.
July 1st marks the opening of Mt. Gassan, the highest and most sacred of the Dewa Sanzan. For centuries, Yamabushi and pilgrims have awaited this moment, not just to walk the mountain, but to reconnect with something deeper than ourselves.
This year, that message feels more urgent than ever.
We asked Master Hoshino what kind of yamabushi season he expected in 2025. Master Hoshino reminded us of what has always been true for the yamabushi:
"The essence of Yamabushi, and yamabushi training, is prayer.
No matter what state the world is in, yamabushi have always prayed sincerely”.
He also reminds us prayer is not just a private act.
"In Japan, we use the word kami.
Overseas, they might call it animism.
Whatever word you choose, the idea is the same:Nature is not separate from us, we are very much a part of it.
In moments of chaos, the way forward is to return to our origins.
To offer gratitude.
To listen.
To pray."
It’s a beautiful message. But more than that, it’s a necessary one.
That’s why we continue our work in the mountains, and why we hope you will join us this year.

Yamabushidō programs invite you to return to the mountains, offer your prayers to the Earth, and reconnect with what truly matters, just as Master Hoshino has done for decades.
